How has this experience made you consider your college path that will ultimately lead to your career?
I think that as of right now I don't really have a good idea of yet what I want to do in the future but This experience made me consider that there are more jobs that you could choose from because I thought I wanted to do culinary and become a chef or a baker but also since I have been interning under the President of Events that maybe I would want to do event planning, because I would want to do culinary and business so I can help my parents because they want to open up a restaurant in the future or I could do event planning because my mom has always been into event planning so maybe I could start a business with her. So this is why I need to go over and reevaluate for what I want to do with my life. For college, I still want to take classes for business or business management for either event planning or culinary to open a restaurant.

I think that my project was important because it just shows of what all I did as a intern at the my site at the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and the event that I helped out with. Being an Intern at the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Is not just sitting at a desk because you will be constantly moving and you will get task that will take awhile but other times it could be fun to do.
What I went through was that I had to write a list of the things that I did and went into detail on why I did what I did and for my event Operation Appreciation I had to remember what I did to help out.
This is an Event that I was glad to be apart of which is called Operation Appreciation. Operation Appreciation is an event to celebrate the people in the military and their families on Armed Forces Day. I helped with setting up and with the military check in.
How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
I made a meaningful contribution to the workplace by asking around if there is anything that they need help with anything so that I can make their day go by a bit smoother. Also I help with tasks that will benefit future events (i.e, putting together the certificates for an awards and recognitions ceremony, handwriting writing letters saying thank you to businesses who are renewing their membership with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce.) How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? My work as an intern was meaningful to my education is some of the tasks are similar to things we would do at school like using a laptop and being able to know how to use Google docs, spreadsheets, excel, publisher, etc. Also as in school they teach you how to work with and around people and to listen to what your mentor/teacher tell you to do. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? Some new appreciations that I developed while working as an intern is patience and staying focused. I learned to appreciate having patience and staying focused because some of the tasks that my mentor has for me would take a while and for me I’m not the most patient person and I sometimes get off task ( well in my opinion) but even tho I dreaded doing the tasks I just had to push through and finish them. How did interpersonal relationships and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of life outside of high school? Collaborating at work influenced my understanding of life outside of high school is because talking and working together is a great way to accomplish something. For example, when there would be a work function a couple of my coworkers and I would work together to set up the tables and make sure there are drinks out or if it’s in the morning someone could make the coffee while the other people still set up or putting the papers needed for the meeting and working together can get the job done faster. Also you can communicate with them on what needs to be done so everyone has a job. How have you advocated for yourself during your internship, or seen advocacy demonstrated in other situations?
I have advocated for myself during my internship is by when my mentor gives me a task I will do it and when I finish I’ll ask to see if there is anything else she needs anything else done, even if it’s a small task I’ll still do it because I love helping people and making their job a bit easier. Are you following the advice in “ How to be an Intern everyone remembers?” If so, How is it working out? If not, what are you going to start doing? I think I am following the “Intern that everyone remembers” because my mentor was out for a couple days and so I would just ask my other staff members if there is anything that I can do to help. Then if they do have something for me to do then I will do it and fully complete it and give my 100% in what I am doing. My other staff members have told me that I am a hard worker and that they appreciate my help. For My internship project is going to be explaining what I have done throughout my time here at my internship and a huge event that I helped set up and prepared for which is called Operation Appreciation and go into further detail on what the event is and why they have it. Some skills that I need are patience, focus, and efficiency. I will need the support by getting pictures from the event and more background information about the event. I will need the support from my mentor and my other staff members by being there if I have any questions or information that I would need.

A typical work day for me is answer and reading emails, planning up to 3 events a day, writing articles for publications, create press releases, etc. This organization is organized by everyone in the workplace we work and rely on each other on the task we need to accomplish. It is important to get along with other people in my career because you have to have a good relationship to have the day go smoothly and if we didn’t along things would be rough and chaotic. A funny part that happened during internship was that I was helping my mentor set up an event for the next day and I had to go into a clean dumpster to grab out the build-able paper trash cans (idk what they are called) and me and my mentor was laughing the whole time that was definitely a first for me. My 1st day was me just doing small tasks for my mentor asked me what to do like organizing and clearing folders and hand writing thank you letters.
What strikes me about my workplace is that it looks professional and it looks like a place where people can get their jobs and tasks done. What strikes me about my colleagues is that they are really friendly but at the same time serious and focused. What strikes me the most about the job I’m doing is that I am getting a good amount of work and It takes a while for me to complete them because they are really detailed tasks for me to do. I am excited to learn about what you need to do for when you are in a business and event planning. I’m not really worried about this internship, from the past 2 days I have really enjoyed it. But I’m worried about what I’m going to do for my project. When I first arrived at my career day I was really nervous because I was about to meet my mentor and everyone in the office and this is a new experience for me. Then my mentor met me at the door. We went straight to her office and it was a little bit messy but its always gonna be messy. She told me about what she does which is event planning and what she does everyday. Then she introduced me to everyone in the office, everyone was so nice and friendly and I felt like I would have a good time working with these people. After that my mentor gave me a tour of the place. For example she showed me the conference room which was an average size conference room and the supply room and the kitchen where I can use the microwave or the fridge. After that she gave me my first task was shredding a binder of old papers from 2013. Before starting, I went to help myself with coffee and donuts. So today was really simple. I had a good career day and I can't wait to start my internship.
A typical work day over there is opening and reading emails, responding to emails and voicemails, works on 3 events each day, plans events, writes articles for publications, write letters, interview, and etc. The general work policies are that they open at 8am to 5pm, they have several employees that have staggered work day schedules, need to come in on time, and the employees need to be reliable and dependable to each other. The dress code is business casual, no t-shirts,jeans, and no tennis shoes (only allowed on casual Fridays or setting up or working at a causal event). |
