Definitions
Congruence is when two objects have the same shape and same size.
Triangle Congruence is when all 6 parts are congruent (every angle and every side).
Ratio is a fraction
Proportion is the name we give to two ratios that are equal.
Similarity is having the same shape while having proportional sides.
Dilation is a transformation that produces an image that is the same shape as the original but is a different size.
Scale factor is referred to as the ratio of the dilation.
Center of dilation is some fixed point in space. When two object are similar they are the same shape but different sizes.
Mathematical Connections
These concepts are overlapping and have many connections. We use proportions to find sides of similar objects. When two objects are similar they are the same shape but different sizes. Correspondingly, when you dilate an object they are the same shape but we change the size.
For benchmark 2 and 3 we had to compare different sizes of the donuts. In benchmark 3 we actually enlarged the donut after finding the correct size in benchmark 2 implementing our knowledge of dilation. Billy Bear helped us prepare for this project because as time passed Billy got bigger. As he grew the area got bigger as well.
Project Description
The Scaling Your World project was choosing an object and scale it from the original size to a bigger or smaller size.
Benchmark #1 - I started by choosing an interesting object which was a donut. We also picked groups and I worked with Dylan and Zach. We also decided the scale factor which was 8. We made a time-lapse video of our team making the donut that will be showed during exhibition.
Benchmark #2- For benchmark #2 what we had to do was we had to figure out the ingredients of a normal sized donut and we times all the ingredients by 8 for the larger donut.
Benchmark #3- For benchmark 3 we actually had to have the finished product so we had to make it. It was really stressful but fun at the same time. so what we did was followed the ingredients that were times by 8 and we combined them together and we had to fry the donut but it was so stressful trying to flip it but we did it.
Reflection
Some struggles that I had while working on for this project was trying to work on this project and the star logo nova thing and then the work from Mrs Howard's hw and it's just really stressful. what i should i do next time is probably is do work on each one on different days, for example work on one that day and work on the other one the next day. The habit of mathematician that i used is "start small" how i used the habit of mathematician start small is by for my group for the benchmarks 2 and 3 we had to start small for all the ingredients and measurements and just the whole project we had to start small. Some success ate that we finished the project instead of not doing it at all and having fun doing it.
