*~Week of inspirational Math~*
1. What was the purpose of this week of investigations and video-watching?
The purpose of watching the first video was not giving up and making mistakes. The first video was about two girls doing doing math and one of them started to start giving up and then the teacher said that it’s okay If you're not a math person and its okay to make mistakes. And we did a problem called tiling a 11x13 rectangle.
2. Give an overview of all the activities and videos.
On day 1 we watched a mindset/ mistakes video and then we did a method called tiling a 11x13 rectangle. Day 2, we watched mindset and mistakes. We did a mini-project called the squares to stairs where we had to find a pattern with the 4 different stairs. Day 3 we did a problem That's called the hailstone sequence where we had to multiply and add the even numbers and divide for the odd numbers and you had to find a pattern. Day 4 we did the painted Cube where we had to find out how many sides to a 9x9 cube.
3. Choose two messages from any of the five videos we watched. Explain the personal significance of those two messages.
Both videos was about a girl who was giving up just because she wasn’t a math person or wasn’t be fast enough to finish a math problems but to me I relate because sometimes I think that I’m not a math person and that im bad at math. And i’m not that fast at math problems. But those videos made me feel better about myself and that mistakes are good..
Tiling a 11x13 rectangle
How I did this problem is you have to try to fit in the least amount of evenly sized squares in a 11x13 rectangle.
I chose this problem because it really made me actually thinking of ways to fit the least amount of squares in the rectangle.
My first approach was to just randomly drawing squares. My next approach was just drawing a huge square and then I was left with like 6 smaller squares. a challenge I faced was that I was having a hard time getting the least amount of squares, I kept trying but I got like 14 or 11 or 8 squares but I couldn't get under 8 squares. And how I overcame that challenge was by talking it over with friends.
- a description of at least one Habit of a Mathematician that you used in working on this problem One of them would have to be Collaborate and Listen (with Modesty) because it's good to collaborate with your friends and hearing some of their ideas instead of not knowing what to do instead of doing it by yourself. This week would help me out In the future is that the videos were really motivating and the problems were helping me with focusing on them and really having to think about different ways that you can do it.
